River Thames at Caversham

Last night I went out for a bite to eat in Caversham, which bolts onto Reading. I was there to meet with my book editor Joanna Rubery. But don’t worry we were not meeting to discuss a new book, so you are safe 😆 I’ve known Joanna over getting on for almost 15 years now. We met through internet dating! That didn’t lead to anything romantically, but we have been good friends ever since. Joanna has kindly edited all three of my books: Beating Bowel Cancer, Lives &Times and The Record. She worked for many years at the Oxford University Press and was more than qualified to get my poor grammar into shape for each book. I will always be incredibly grateful to her for this amazing support.

Due to the pandemic the last time we had seen each other, before last night, was towards the end of 2019, so it was over two and a half years ago. We had plenty to catch up on over a really nice meal in a Thai restaurant. It’s nice to be catching up people after so long and just slowly working on rebuilding my social life…

Caversham itself is a place where I used to have the occasional drunken night out, but it has been many years since I had been out there full stop. The scene from Caversham Bridge looking over the Thames is quite stunning, especially on a barmy summer’s evening.
