April being bowel cancer awareness month saw the release from Fields of Dawn of The Final Post EP. This very special release supported Bowel Cancer UK, The Bowel Movement and Bowel Cancer Australia. Monique Buckingham died towards the end of 2022 and Nicole Cooper was lost at the beginning of 2023. Two quite wonderful young women whose loss was felt by so many people. I’d written two new songs in tribute called Monique and Nicole which featured on this release. Superb production from Adam Hodgson gave these two tracks added depth and sentiment.
The third track on EP was the title track, The Final Post. Nicole’s final post on the day she died was the most beautiful, inspiring and yet incredibly sad piece of writing I think I have ever read on social media. I approached 12 ladies from the bowel cancer community to narrate those words and then put it all together in a song. It worked better than I could ever have hoped for and I will always be incredibly grateful to the 12 ladies for their support with this. Sadly, Laura and Jen, from the 12 are no longer with us xx
Kirsten Adamson is a fantastic singer songwriter. The daughter of the late Stuart Adamson of Big Country and The Skids released the brilliant Landing Place album and played a small intimate house gig in High Wycombe which was well within striking distance for me to get to. To see someone like Kirsten up close in an intimate setting was a real treat and during the interval she was signing records and posing for photos. Her performance was simply mesmerising and the evening was superb.
Continuing the musical theme I also travelled to Cardiff to see the rearranged 40th anniversary concert by The Alarm. The pandemic meant the original date was postponed and then Mike Peters was seriously ill with leukaemia which he has lived with for over 20 years. It was a great opportunity for friends to gather and catch up as well as seeing the band play songs spanning the entire 40 years of the band. Another fantastic gig by my favourite band!
April was very much about the music. With the clocks going forward the daylight hours were extended and in fact the day in Cardiff temperatures were into the 70s making it just a stunning day in the Welsh capitol.
