A little bit of luck got #bowelbear Charlie into Headingley cricket ground the home of Yorkshire County Cricket and of course every so often to England too. I’ve spent the weekend visiting my brother’s new home in Leeds, which is located only a few minutes from the ground. We went there with the expectation of taking a photo from outside, which is what we did first. However, there is currently a lot of building work going, and we just wandered through a gate and down to the pitch. So myself and #bowelbear Charlie had our photo taken on an English Test cricket ground. A pretty special moment in the #bowelbear story so far.
Our next stop was at Elland Road, the home of Leeds United. We were not quite so fortunate in our efforts to get into the ground. The fact that no-one was working meant there wasn’t any way of getting inside or even asking anyone. We were stopped by a security guard, who although sympathetic to our quest, was unable to get us access to inside the stadium. He suggested we came back in the week. So maybe another time we shall see.
The stop bowel cancer bears are raising awareness about bowel cancer. My mum died from this awful illness in 2016, and bowel cancer is the second highest cancer killer in the UK. 16,000 people die each year. However if detected early at stage 1 it can be successfully treated in over 90% of cases. At the moment only 15% of cases are detected at stage 1, so improving early detection rates is vital to improving survival rates.
