Meet #bowelbear Doug who has arrived at his new home with Gillian Wood. Gillian has named her bear after her colorectal surgeon. Recovering from bowel cancer Gillian has recently undergone a stoma reversal procedure, and I am also very happy to say I will be finally meeting her when we meet for her inclusion in, The Record, my forthcoming charity book in support of Bowel Cancer UK being done in memory of my mum who died in 2016. Gillian is another one of the amazing people who I have come in to contact with through a love of music, specifically The Alarm.
The idea behind the stop bowel cancer bears is to raise awareness about bowel cancer, and at the same time follow the bears journey and see where they go to next. The bears cost £10.99 in the shop, and all proceeds raised are donated to Bowel Cancer UK. Today I donated £68.17 from proceeds raised so far.
Bowel cancer is the second highest cancer killer in the UK. 16,000 patients die each year. However, if detected at the early stage 1 it can be successfully treated in over 90% of cases. At the late stage 4 this figure drops dramatically to just 7%. Improving early detection rates is key. At the moment just 15% of diagnosed cases are at stage 1, and this needs to change…
