I would like to give a massive thanks to The Slow Readers Club for doing a photo with my stop bowel cancer bear after their gig at SUB 89 in Reading last night. The band were signing merchandise and I grabbed the opportunity, and I was very grateful, for their support. My mum died in August 2016 from bowel cancer, which is the second highest cancer killer in the UK, but can be successfully treated in over 90% of cases if caught early. I am selling the teddies on my rivers2cross website to raise funds for Bowel Cancer UK, and raise awareness about bowel cancer. April is bowel cancer awareness month, so this was the perfect opportunity to get off to a great start. I think this is the first time one of the bears has met and been photographed with a band at a gig. The possibilities are endless with the bears.
I first saw The Slow Readers Club supporting James at The Royal Albert Hall a few years ago, and I was really impressed with them. Last night in Reading was the first time I’d seen the band doing their own headline show. It was a brilliant evening. The band have recently turned full-time, and put out their stunning third LP, Build A Tower. The set consisted of tracks from all three albums, and the lighting and sound quality was as a good as I’ve seen at SUB 89. It was the first time the band had played in Reading, so hopefully they will be back again sometime soon.
Before the band came on stage, one of the security guys very kindly allowed me to do a picture with #bowelbear Charlie sitting on one of the stage monitors as the roadies were setting up in the background. I had to take the opportunity to buy the current LP in vinyl, and get the band to sign it, so I took a photo of that to complete a highly enjoyable Sunday evening.
