Where has the time gone? On this day in 2019 I published The Record. My third and most recent fundraising book that took almost 3 years to write and put together following Mum’s death in 2016. To date the book has raised over £1000 for Bowel Cancer UK. It is perhaps only in recent times that I have really been able to appreciate the achievement and what it means to have done it.

The idea behind the book was to meet people and talk to them about their lives. I asked everyone in the book what was the first record that they bought. The book includes numerous famous people and bands including Victoria Derbyshire, Kim Wilde, Hazel O’Connor, Sian Lloyd, Steve Norman, Frank Turner, The Alarm, Nick Robinson, Bill Turnbull, Basil Brush and many many more. Perhaps most importantly though, it also features some amazing people from the bowel community. Sadly Kelly Smith who also wrote the forward for the book is no longer with us. Greg Gilbert whose painting I used for the front cover has also died of this awful illness, and the amazing Deborah ‘Bowelbabe’ James is on end of life care, yet still raising millions for charity x
Writing the books has been truly life-changing for me. I will never be able to thank everyone enough for their participation and the impact it has had on me. Of course, nothing could ever make up for the loss of Mum, but before she was diagnosed I was extremely introverted and shy when it came to engaging with people I didn’t know. By doing the books and fundraising in general I have managed to discover that person inside me who was kept hidden away for so long. Making friendships with so many people over the last 10 years of fundraising and raising awareness about bowel cancer has been a tremendous gift to me, and something very positive I can take from losing mum x
