I have calculated that in the two and a half years it took me to complete the meetings for The Record, I clocked up approximately 6,500 miles, which is roughly the equivalent of driving from the UK to Cambodia! So the book involved some serious travelling, but worth every mile travelled.
The furthest I travelled from Reading was to Glasgow, which I combined with a photo in Leeds. I made a couple of trips to Cardiff, and also hit the south coast a number of times. Most parts of the UK were covered with London ultimately being the most common destination. The final photo with Ryan Hamilton was done in New York, but as I was already there and this was a last minute bonus chapter, I have not included those miles in the total. The mileage total could have been even higher as one of the chapters involved a video chat to Melbourne. How I would have loved to have been able to make the trip to do that one…
As for the cost of putting the book together in terms of travelling and tickets that would be be difficult to work out, but I would put it somewhere in the region of £2500. That money is my own contribution. I feel that it is very important that all the proceeds raised from each sale is donated to the Bowel Cancer UK.
The Record is available from rivers2cross.com and all good online retailers, and it is dedicated to the memory of my mum who died of bowel cancer in 2016.
