It seems incredible that it is now over four years ago back in 2014 that I met Matthew Wright for the Lives & Times bowel cancer fundraising book. The Talk Radio presenter has been a tremendous support ever since we first made contact. Anyone who has bought Lives & Times will have read the lovely foreword that he kindly wrote for it. Matthew is very passionate about bowel cancer – sadly his father died from this awful disease. During our meeting I got to see his vintage motorbikes, which are his pride and joy. We talked about his then daytime television show, The Wright Stuff, on Channel 5, and about his experience appearing on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. He was great fun to spend time with, and is just a really nice man!
Over the past four years, since our meeting, much has happened. Sadly my mum died in 2016 from bowel cancer. The operation she had to remove the tumour in 2012 was successful, but unfortunately the cancer had already spread to her lungs, and then finally it also progressed to her brain. Matthew has recently started his daytime radio show from 1.00 – 4.00 on weekday afternoons on Talk Radio. It’s a great listen, and there have been a number of guests on the show who have either featured in Lives & Times, or will be in the forthcoming book, The Record, due out in 2019. I have continued my fundraising, which now is donated to Bowel Cancer UK (Beating Bowel Cancer Together). Since 2012 the total amount raised by items on my rivers2cross.com website, climbing Mount Snowdon, and my recent Skydive now totals around £9000. I also do my best to help raise awareness about bowel cancer. It remains the 2nd highest cancer killer in the UK, and yet if caught early it is one of the most treatable with 5 year survival rates at over 90%.
