Two years ago on this day in December 2018 I travelled to Brighton to meet Steve Norman and Sabrina Winter. They had kindly agreed to be part of The Record my bowe l cancer charity book written in memory of my mum who died of bowel cancer in 2016.
Steve, is best known for being in Spandau Ballet, and his partner Sabrina is not just a singer with her own band Stereoblonde, but performs with Steve, and is also his manager. They both have pretty decent first records, which are revealed in the book. They sent me this cracking photo of themselves with their copies of The Record.
There are plenty connections to other chapters in the book. Steve and Sabrina are great friends with The Alarm. In fact I was fortunate enough to see Steve appear on stage with Mike Peters and The Alarm on a very special weekend in Llandudno in 2012. It was perhaps memories of this that gave me the idea for getting Steve and Sabrina involved in the book. They are also friends of both Kim Wilde and Hazel O’Connor, who both also feature in The Record. Sabrina has performed with both of these ladies in the past as well.
I was able to ask Steve all about Spandau Ballet, and his life in music, and he was just the most lovely, genuine and normal guy you could wish to meet, and I loved listening to him recounting wonderful stories especially about the early days of the band. It’s one of my favourite chapters in the book. I was very grateful to Sabrina for setting up the meeting, as without her help it would not have happened. I really appreciated Steve being prepared to be involved with The Record, and meeting me so soon after tragic loss of his sister Dee to cancer.
All proceeds raised from sales of The Record are being donated to Bowel Cancer UK. The book is available as an eBook, paperback and hardback. Click here for all the ways to purchase a copy.
We had great fun doing the photos. Steve has an eye for a good photo, and was really enthusiastic to make sure I got the best photos possible. We spent time in the narrow streets of The Lanes and then some spent time on the deserted beach. In fact, as we got so many great shots, the hardest thing to do was to choose which photos to use in the book.
Steve and Sabrina were great sports and happy to do some photos with the stop bowel cancer bear to help raise awareness about bowel cancer.
Since meeting Steve and Sabrina I have also had some amazing support from their fans, and I am fortunate to have made some great new friendships as a result. This has been a massive positive that I have taken out of something so dreadful as losing a loved one to cancer. Writing The Record has been both cathartic and life-changing. A massive thanks to Steve and Sabrina for all their support…
