The Shape Of Things To Come
The Headboys

I was recently introduced to the music of The Headboys by Ed Bazalgette of The Vapors, who told me that he was a fan of the band in the late 1970s. I had a look on Youtube and found there single The Shape Of Things To Come which is a cracking song that was their only chart success reaching number 45 in the UK singles chart.

I went onto Discogs and bought their 1979 eponymous album ‘The Headboys’ on vinyl for £1.99, and it’s a blinding piece of work – post punk power pop is the best description I can come up with. It sounds gorgeous on my Audio-Technica LP5 turntable, and I have recently converted it into mp3 format to play in the car. I was a little surprised to see that it has never had a digital release. I never tire of discovering and enjoying new music, and that can be a current day release, or in this case, a record that was released almost 40 years ago.

The band comprised of Lou Lewis (guitar and vocals), George Boyter (bass and vocals), Calum Malcolm (keyboards), the late Davy Ross (drums), and Bob Heatlie (keyboard, sax and vocals). Sadly the band were cast as one hit wonders and disappeared. Calum Malcolm went on to become a respected record producer and sound engineer. In 2013 ‘The Lost Album’ was released, and was a ten track album consisting of tracks that the band recorded for their second album that never got released.
