Towards the end of last year I had a video chat with Nicole Cooper for The Record.
Chapter 12 in The Record really served as a stark reminder to me just how awful bowel cancer is. If there was ever a good reason for buying the book then this chapter is it. Deborah James died on July 27th 2017 aged just 37 leaving behind her young daughter Grace.
It was back in September 2017 that I spent a really nice evening in the company of Deborah James in Richmond for Chapter 16 in The Record. It was a fascinating, and enlightening experience listening to her story, and talking at length about bowel cancer.
In the summer of 2018 I went to SKY Television to meet Jacquie Beltrao for my bowel cancer fundraising book, The Record. At the time she was in remission from breast cancer and heading for five years being cancer clear. Jacquie’s cancer returned in 2020 as stage 4 breast cancer and anyone who follows her
One of the last people I spoke to for The Record was Jules Peters. This chapter was a long time in the making, and when a meeting with Jules before The Alarm’s December 2018 gig in Reading had to be cancelled, I did wonder if my opportunity might have gone. However, we had a brief chat in Llandudno at The Gathering in early 2019, and Jules was still keen to support the book, so plans were put in place to make it happen.
I took my cuddly friends to The All England Lawn Tennis Club at Wimbledon. I contacted my friend Matthew Crawcour, Head of Championships Operations, who I also play cricket with at Knowl Hill CC, and I asked for a big favour as I was working in the area, and he totally came through for me.
On The Way and Far Far Away the recent release from Fields of Dawn has raised over £365 for the Love Hope Strength Foundation co-founded by Mike & Jules Peters of The Alarm. Mike and Jules are doing the 177 miles Offa’s Dyke Trek from May 23rd to June 3rd raising funds for LHS, so
When I began writing The Record after Mum’s death in 2016 the first thing I decided was to approach the bowel cancer community to support the book. I didn’t want the book to be purely about bowel cancer, but I was not going to shy away from the subject matter either. After all I had just lost my mum to this awful disease, I was dedicating the book to her memory, and I set out with purpose of producing a book that would raise funds for Bowel Cancer UK.
April is bowel cancer awareness month, and my musical project Fields of Dawn has released a special 2-track single to help raise awareness about bowel cancer, and also funds for Bowel Cancer UK. This video of “You” one of the tracks features bowel cancer patients, families and friends who are helping me to raise awareness about this awful disease.
Take your teddy with you to all your favourite places, and then take a photo to raise awareness. I have received photos from all over over the world from as away as Australia and New Zealand. In a time when travel is difficult there are still so many interesting laces on our doorstep to take a photo with the bear.
