My new bowel cancer book, The Record, and includes my meetings with a couple of comedians, one of whom was Lucy Porter, who I met shortly before her gig at Norden Farm in Maidenhead. This modern arts centre is actually in the road where my parents lived for almost 50 years, and where I grew up. When we were little it really was a proper farm. The meeting came together very quickly, as I’d only made contact with Lucy just a week or so earlier. She couldn’t have been nicer, and as well as spending some time chatting with me, and doing some photos, Lucy also organised me a ticket for the show. It was very entertaining evening, and I’d highly recommend seeing Lucy live. In The Record I reveal Lucy’s first record she bought, which is an absolute belter! I enjoyed the evening so much that earlier this year I went to see Lucy again – this time she was performing at the South Street Arts Centre in Reading, and she very kindly gave me a mention during the show.
I wrote The Record in memory of my mum who had bowel cancer, and died in August 2016. All proceeds raised are donated to Bowel Cancer UK, the UK’s leading bowel cancer charity. Bowel cancer is the second highest cancer killer in the UK, and each year 16,000 people die of it. However if detected early at stage 1 it can be successfully treated in over 93% of cases. This dramatically falls to 7% when diagnosed at stage 4. At the moment only 15% of patients are detected at stage 1. So raising awareness is vital to help improve early detection rates. Bowel Cancer UK is doing some amazing work driving this process forward, and I am proud to be raising funds for them, and making my own small contribution to raising awareness.
The Record is available as a paperback, hardback and eBook. It features my meetings with many famous people from the worlds of music, sport, television, and comedy as well as many amazing people from the bowel cancer community. Everyone who took part has told about the first record that they bought.
