A year ago in December 2018 I met Skinny Lister before their sold out gig at The Garage in Highbury for my recently published bowel cancer charity book The Record. I’d already had a photo pass from the band 18 months earlier to photograph them at The Scala, and after a few near misses we finally managed to arrange an actual meeting for a band photo at their festive London concert. I also managed to find out their first records, which are varied and wonderful, and are revealed in the chapter in the book.

Soundcheck

I must admit I was only expecting to have a few minutes with the band to do the photo, so what actually took place was absolutely brilliant. Lorna met me out the back of the venue, and said that as things were a bit chaotic I could come in and watch the soundcheck before taking their photo. What an amazing experience it was watching the band set their gear up and go about getting their sound spot on. They played over half a dozen songs, and it was fascinating.

It was a freezing cold day, and it still was quite cold inside the venue so the band were all wearing extra layers during the soundcheck. The temperature had certainly increased by the time they came onto stage just after 9.00 to a full house. The band were on top form, and played an amazing set with plenty of new songs from the 4th album The Story Is…

A big thanks to the band for their support, especially Lorna without whose help this wouldn’t have happened. The Record is in memory of my mum who died of bowel cancer in 2016. It’s the second biggest cancer killer in the UK with 16,000 lives lost to it each year. However, if detected early it can be successfully treated in over 90% of cases. All proceeds raised from sales of the book will be donated to Bowel Cancer UK.
