Today’s post during bowel cancer awareness month is the chapter from the Lives & Times bowel cancer fundraising book on my mum, who sadly died of bowel cancer in August 2016. Mum lived to see the book published, and in fact shed a few tears when she saw it for the first time.
April 2020 the world has changed in an instant, and we are living in extremely scary times. However, it must not be forgotten that April is bowel cancer awareness month, and I intend to do what I can to help raise awareness about bowel cancer. For many patients treatments have been delayed and postponed causing much worry and anxiousness. Sadly for many people this month will also be a time when they receive a bowel cancer diagnosis. So here is a little of what raising awareness means to me and an introduction to bowel cancer.

Chapter 19 in The Record features my meeting with Greg Gilbert and Stacey Heale who I travelled to meet in Southampton at the end of 2018. They are two hugely inspirational people, and we talked about Greg’s stage 4 bowel cancer and his career as a musician with his band Delays, and as a wonderfully talented artist and poet. We also talked about Stacey’s life as, not just Greg’s carer, but as a former university lecturer turned newspaper columnist who helps raise awareness about bowel cancer, and gives talks about Greg’s bowel cancer and the effect it has had on her and the family.
Chapter 18 of The Record features Olivia Rowlands who I chatted with at the beginning of 2019. Liv lives in St. Andrews with her husband Sam, but sadly events conspired against us, and I wasn’t able to make the trip to Scotland to meet her in person.
I met Dafydd Wyn Farr-Jones at the start of 2019 for Chapter 17 of The Record, my fundraising book for Bowel Cancer UK. I’ve known Daf for some years on social media, and had first met him and his partner Russell about 18 months ago in London, so it was great to catch up with them again.
Lauren Backler’s mum died of bowel cancer in 2015 aged 56. If the bowel cancer screening age had been 50 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to match Scotland instead of being 60, her mum would have been scanned, and Lauren believes would still be alive today.
